Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine

The department is to be a pioneer in teaching anesthesiology and intensive care medicine at the national and regional levels in accordance with scientific, professional and humanitarian foundations.

Preparing specialist physicians in anesthesiology and intensive care who are distinguished scientifically and professionally to meet the needs of society through a distinguished specialized medical program based on an academic and professional approach to provide safe, high-quality care.

  • Bachelor of General Medicine & Surgery (M.B.Ch.B) + Diploma of anesthesiology and intensive care.

General objectives of the department:

The department’s program aims to:

  1. Providing the modern professional and academic services in anesthesia, perioperative care, pain management and intensive care.
  2. Graduating specialized medical cadres in the field of anesthesiology capable of providing safe care for patients based on specialized scientific and professional foundations that based on professional ethics.
  3. Encouraging students to join the specialized field of anesthesiology to cover the deficit resulting from physicians’ reluctance to join this specialization.

Educational (foundational) objectives of the department:

  1. Providing the department’s students with basic knowledge in medical and clinical sciences, drug interactions, anesthesiology and intensive care sciences, and their relationship to the various branches of medicine.
  2. Providing students with practical skills and evaluating the patient’s condition to determine laboratory and radiological tests to make the appropriate decision.
  3. Providing the student with the skills of education, self-learning, and the use of medical equipment and devices, information technology, medical guides, and scientific research to keep pace with developments in the specialty.
  4. Providing students with basic knowledge to understand the impact of different life stages, gender differences, different lifestyles, genetic, psychological, social and epidemiological factors and their impact on the provision of anesthesia and critical care services.
  5. Providing students with effective communication skills and documentation methods

Learning outcomes of the department’s program:

) Knowledge and understanding:

After completing this program, the student will be able to:

  • To describe the body’s composition, structure, functions, and the most important imbalances that may occur in it, especially with regard to anesthesia and intensive care.
  • To name the causes of infection, methods of transmission, and methods of combating them, especially in the work environment.
  • Enumerates the constitutions, methods of anesthesia and intensive care, and their controls.
  • to learn about the principles, therapeutic and pharmaceutical properties of drugs and their interactions.
  • To review the mechanisms of disease occurrence, their pathological impact, and how to deal with emergency situations.
  • To determine the theoretical and practical principles for dealing with anesthesia and intensive care devices and tools; and calibrating them to ensure their safe performance.
  1. B) Intellectual skills:

After completing this program, the student will be able to:

  • To link the concepts and practices of the various branches of basic and clinical medical sciences and the specialty of anesthesiology and intensive care medicine.
  • To come out with and conclude the appropriate diagnosis of pathological cases through linking the medical history, clinical examinations, laboratory analyses and radiographs.
  • To analyze the readings of monitoring devices and other related devices that are used to follow up patients.
  • To analyze the drug and pharmaceutical interactions of various drugs with anesthetic drugs and their effect on the patient.
  • To compare different anesthesia and intensive care techniques to choose the most appropriate.

After completing this program, the student will be able to:

  • Correctly document patients’ data in detail in records and computers.
  • To master the life-saving skills, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills.
  • To use modern and available medical technologies and devices to provide the safe performance of medical tasks according to the required specialty.
  • To provide perioperative care, pain management and critical care management.
  • To apply infection control principles and procedures.
  • To contribute in educating and training the medical staff in his field.

After completing this program, the student will be able to:

  • To apply the principles of effective communication and communicating with patients and the surrounding environment.
  • To use the principles and methods of scientific research and modern scientific and technical means.
  • To deal with problems that may arise in the work environment in a rational manner.
  • To manage time and self to work in various circumstances, especially in crises and epidemics.
  • To practice the profession of medicine in accordance with the ethics of the profession and the laws regulating it.
